About Cuídate

Cuídate is Spanish for “take care of yourself.” Cuídate is also a collaborative, community initiative focusing on East Orlando and its unique community and special health issues.

The primary goal of Cuídate is to promote good health practices and link the Hispanic residents of East Orlando with valuable community resources.

The East Orlando Community

East Orlando has high rates of chronic illness such as heart disease and diabetes, a large number of residents lacking health insurance, and the busiest hospital emergency departments in the Orlando area. Overcrowded emergency rooms have created long waits and individuals leaving before seeing a physician.

Compared to other communities in Orange County, East Orlando has the highest concentration of Hispanics and speakers of Spanish, a younger average age for its residents (average age is 32 years), and a lower average household income. While income is lower than the county average, a large percentage of residents have jobs.

Chronic Disease Self-Management

Tomando Control de Su Salud is a community-based program available at no cost to Spanish-speaking individuals with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis.  Classes teach participants how to manage their disease and improve their lifestyle.  Similar to the English-language version (CDSMP), Tomando Control de Su Salud is a CDC-approved six-week course created by Stanford University which has been proven to be highly successful in other states in both English and Spanish.

Medicaid and KidCare Enrollment

Cuídate provides assistance with enrollment in Medicaid, Florida Kid Care and other programs.  Bilingual specialists help guide individuals through the enrollment process and understanding eligibility requirements.

Community Health Clinics and Low Cost Medication

Bilingual Health Coordinators are available to help answer questions about low cost prescription medications, community health clinics for the uninsured, and finding physicians who accept Medicaid.
